摘要 | Abstract
The rising adoption of industrial robots in China is radically changing the role of workers in the production process. While reducing the possibility of workers being injured, it has also greatly increased workers' inner anxiety. Compared to previous studies which focus on its impact on the economy, our paper may be an earlier study to investigate the relation between robot adoption and health consequences of manufacturing workers using data from China. Our research demonstrates that the adoption of robots can improve the physical health of workers. Specifically, a one-standard-deviation increase in our prefecture-level of robot exposure is associated with a 12.8 percentage points reduction in the probability of experiencing illness or injury. Further analysis suggests that the low-skilled and the middle-aged are the main beneficiaries, while we detect no improvement in disease severity. Finally, our finding has documented that robot penetration may be an additional driving force for the high incidence of mental anxiety in China, especially for low-skilled workers.
